Badging


We have Eight badging stations that need a variety of coverage. Some like the consuite badging stations need coverage from noon on Thursday when we start the convention, through 5:00 pm on Sunday when closing ceremonies starts.

Other stations have different schedules. Connies Space Lounge needs a badger when they are open, which is significantly different hours from, oh Programming for example. The Eight stations are CVG-Central, Programming-North, Programming-South, Atrium-West, Connies-Space-Lounge, Consuite-North, Consuite-South and Gaming-22nd-Floor. There are also 2 stations that are not 'badging' but are scheduled in a similar way, these are Coat Check for Art show, and 22nd Floor Host.

The tables below are broken up into days with somewhat unususal scheduling. From Midnight trough 9 am, all stations that need coverage are broken out to 1 hour shifts. From 9 am to Midnight, all shifts are an hour and a half. The Shifts during the day start half an hour before programming for the day begins.

The reason that the tables end at 10:30 am for Thursday, Friday and Saturday is that these tables will be provided to operations so that they have some idea of what areas may need additional coverage while the volunteers desk is closed.

If a station is 'closed' it will have a grey background. This means that we do not expect this station to be 'manned.' If a station does not have anyone scheduled for it, it will have a white background. If someone is scheduled for the station, the background will be lime.

We will be maintaining a separate list of who has signed up for what station and shift. This is for your privacy.

We will send you a response with the list of times and locations you have requested. If you forget what time and location you requested, please stop by the volunteer desk and we will be able to look that up by your e-mail address, or first or last name as you provided them.

The 'code' is a 2 character identifier for the location, a 2 character day of week identifier, and a 4 digit time in 24 hour syntax. If you sign up for multiple locations at the same time on the same date, I will be contacting you about your time machine. (I have two panels I need to attend at the same time on the same day, and I could use the help.)

Some stations work very well for two or three friends to work together. As an example, while Art Show is open, Coat Check can easily use two people. Likewise 22nd Floor host, and Gaming Badger will be working together. New this year is the Atrium West badging station. This is relocated from Art Show over to the West end of the North Tower first floor, and the area to be monitored is a little larger than most of the other badging stations. As a result, we would really love to have more than one person badging this area.

That said, all stations are somewhat friendly to having more than one person working the station. We may not be setting up seating for a family at a station, but in most cases having an extra pair of eyes can be helpful.

The Schedule provided above is making a couple of assumptions that may be incorrect. It is subject to change without notice, though if any change affects a timeslot that you have volunteered for, I will do my best to provide an update to you regarding that change.

Remember, Badging is not security. If someone is giving you problems because they won't show you a badge, or you are concerned about the appearance of the badge that they display, bring your concerns to the attention of a wandering host. You will undoubtedly be asked where 'registration' is this year. We did move it a couple of years ago, and it is now on the first floor, next to the Hotel registration desk, in what was once the comedy club.

If there were a badging 'scritp' it would be to say "Hello!" to everyone you see, "Thank you!" to everyone who has their badge prominently displayed, and "Can I help you?" to anyone who does not have a badge on display. One of two or possibly three things will happen. First, and most likely is that the person you will ask will look baffled for a moment, then realize they are not showing a badge, and pull it out and show you. The other likely event will be that they will look confused, and ask you what do you mean. Respond plesantly that you noticed that they don't have their badge on display, which usually means that they may be looking for registration. Additionally everyone going into the area where you are working is expected to have registered and have a badge. You would be happy to direct them to registration if they need the assistance.

And again, if you see something suspicious, someone 'running' past the station, or attempting to go around it some way, take down a brief description of the situation, and let a wandering host know about it. I'm hoping that they will be checking in with you several times during your shift to make sure all is going well.
